Mead is one of those drinks that a lot of people have heard of, but not everyone really knows what it is. The simplest way to describe it is honey wine, though that only tells part of the story. Instead of fermenting grapes like wine, mead is made by fermenting honey with water.
From there, mead can go in all sorts of directions. It can be sweet or dry, still or sparkling, rich and spiced, light and refreshing, or packed with fruit and other natural flavours. There is a huge range of styles, which is part of what makes mead so interesting.
At its core, though, mead starts with two main ingredients:
water and honey. That simple foundation is what makes it the oldest known alcoholic drink in the world. It has been enjoyed for thousands of years and continues to find new life with modern mead makers today.
